Wondering about swimming lessons for your little one? Little Fishes Swim School, in Brentwood, knows what to do. The school has classes for swimmers as young as 6 months old. Here is a Q&A with the head swimmer, Ruthie.
Wishbone: Little Fishes has seen amazing growth since you started. What has been the coolest part of that process?
Ruthie: Seeing children going from being afraid and crying, to having swimming be their favorite activity. Seeing our water babies grow up and becoming accomplished swimmers.
Wishbone: You’ve just opened a brand new space that can accommodate three times as many students per week as the old space. What’s your favorite thing about it? What are you most excited about?
Ruthie: The ability to teach a life-saving skill to the children we could not accommodate in our first facility. I am also really enjoying seeing the excitement of children and parents as they walk into the new facility.
Wishbone: When is the best time for a child to learn to swim?
Ruthie: The earlier a child gets comfortable in and under that water, the earlier they will be swimming independently. Our parent/baby classes start at 6 months old, and the babies quickly learn to hold their breath and move through the water.
Wishbone: How long does it typically take for a child to feel confident in the water?
Ruthie: Since every child is different, there is no “typical.” We use lots of tools and techniques to achieve success with each individual so they all become confident swimmers, just at their own speed.
Wishbone: How does learning to swim affect a child’s personality?
Ruthie: You can see their sense of pride and self-confidence grow in and out of the water.
Wishbone: Do you have a favorite story to tell about Little Fishes?
Ruthie: Helping the community see that infants and toddlers can happily swim underwater, a 3-year-old can swim freestyle across a pool, and that children should swim independently before they can read.
